Dybala and Pellegrini see Roma improvement after feeling the pressure https://football-italia.net/dybala-and-pellegrini-see-roma-improvement/ https://football-italia.net/dybala-and-pellegrini-see-roma-improvement/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 16:40:10 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922919

Paulo Dybala admits he was getting ‘pressure’ to score his first Serie A goal of the season, while Lorenzo Pellegrini sees Roma improvements in a 1-0 win at Sassuolo.

The Giallorossi had lost three of their last four competitive games between Serie A and the Champions League, but emerged with a 1-0 victory from the Mapei Stadium.

The only goal of the game was scored by Dybala, on the rebound from a save on Bryan Cristante, to put them joint top of the table alongside Napoli.

Dybala and Pellegrini lead Roma response

“We are relaxed, we knew before the game with the other results that we could take top spot, but there is a very long way to go,” Dybala told DAZN Italia.

“These are three important points, also for us to make up for recent setbacks, and now we have to turn our focus to Wednesday.”

Although he had found the net in the Europa League, this was La Joya’s first Serie A goal of the season, and it allowed him to debut a special celebration with the ball under his jersey, for pregnant wife Oriana.

“Strikers live for goals, obviously, so we would love to score in every game. Unfortunately, there are negative moments during the season, but the important thing is that the team wins, not who scores.

“I had been waiting to make this celebration, as my wife was putting pressure on me to get on with it!”

Pellegrini came off the bench and almost scored within 120 seconds, as his dinked finish bounced off the upright.

The former captain was asked if Roma really can aim to stay top of the table and if a Scudetto challenge is their objective this season.

“The objective is to keep improving, and I thought today was a little better when attacking than previous games, we could’ve scored a few more goals,” replied Pellegrini.

“We were coming off defeats and really eager to prove ourselves on the pitch. We are giving our all.”

Curiously, all four defeats between Serie A and the Europa League have been at the Stadio Olimpico, but even in away fixtures, Roma always have a strong presence of cheering fans.

“We are fortunate that our fans always travel with us with passion, I don’t think they realise how much they give to us on the field with their presence. This is also a special match for me, as I called Sassuolo home for a while and want to salute the Sassuolo supporters too, as they remained in my heart.”

Gasperini: ‘Never had doubts on Dybala, Cristante did that role first’ https://football-italia.net/gasperini-never-had-doubts-on-dybala-cristante/ https://football-italia.net/gasperini-never-had-doubts-on-dybala-cristante/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 16:31:23 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922914

Gian Piero Gasperini reveals why the Paulo Dybala and Bryan Cristante tactical experiments go way back, as Roma beat Sassuolo and turn to their next ‘absolute priority.’

The use of Dybala as a False 9 has failed to provide results so far, but it paid off eventually, as La Joya scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory away to Sassuolo this afternoon.

Wesley and Zeki Celik also came close, while Lorenzo Pellegrini hit the upright just moments after coming off the bench, but it proved enough for all three points and the leadership alongside Napoli.

“I am very satisfied with our position, but also with today’s game, as it was not easy against a Sassuolo side that is doing well. After two defeats to Inter and Viktoria Plzen that left us with regrets, there was a good reaction,” Gasperini told DAZN Italia.

Midfielder Cristante tended to push into a more advanced role, and that was decisive for the goal before Dybala turned in the rebound, but Gasperini noted this is hardly new.

“I never doubted that Dybala was a striker. I might’ve had doubts on others. He can play as a centre-forward, a support striker, just not really wide. Players have characteristics and a coach must try to make the most of those strengths.

“I have to say Mario Pasalic scored lots of goals in that role over the years with me and Atalanta, but even if it was eight years ago, Cristante had been doing it first! He hasn’t forgotten, he is now more mature and experienced, so is giving the team a big hand.”

Gasperini still experimenting with Roma attack

Artem Dovbyk came off the bench and was instructed to not drift into the middle too much, so how is the Ukrainian developing under Gasperini’s very different style?

“We needed to keep the forwards a little wider for this match and allow spaces for the midfielders to push through the centre. Dovbyk came on well, his fitness levels are certainly better now,” noted the coach.

“I work with everyone and try to improve them, I’m attempting to find solutions in attack, because that has been the least prolific area of the team. Despite that, we have a good position in the table.

“It requires experiments during the matches, as Dybala was out for a while, this was the first time Bailey managed to start, so we are getting there.”

This means Roma are top of the Serie A table after eight rounds, which hadn’t happened since the 2013-14 campaign, albeit sharing the seat with Napoli.

Their next fixture is the midweek round against Parma on Sunday at 17.30 GMT, hoping to end their run of home losses.

“It is absolutely a priority to win at home. It’s a pity for our fans, who were not accustomed to seeing so many defeats. With an always sold out stadium and passionate crowd behind us, we want to give them something to celebrate,” added Gasperini.

“Some performances were unlucky, but others like on Thursday we really should’ve won. We have to be wary, as evidently some of our characteristics see us hit our heads against a brick wall at home and then concede on the counter, so we need to be more efficient.”

Serie A | Sassuolo 0-1 Roma: Dybala sends Giallorossi top https://football-italia.net/serie-a-sassuolo-0-1-roma-dybala-giallorossi/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-sassuolo-0-1-roma-dybala-giallorossi/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 15:56:59 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922892

Paulo Dybala’s first Serie A goal of the season proved enough to beat Sassuolo and send Roma to the top of the table alongside Napoli.

The Giallorossi had the opportunity to go joint top of the table, but had also lost three of their last four games, including Thursday’s 2-1 to Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. Angelino was the only absentee, but Matias Soulé was rested, with Paulo Dybala used as a False 9 and Leon Bailey getting his first start. The Neroverdi had seven points from three rounds and brought Alieu Fadera into the trident attack, with ex-Roma man Nemanja Matic in midfield. Tarik Muharemovic, Yeferson Paz, Daniel Boloca and Edoardo Pieragnolo missed out.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

It was an aggressive start from the hosts, as after a strong Aliou Fadera run from midfield, Kristian Thorstvedt got the header all wrong from seven yards. Mile Svilar then flew to palm away a deflected Fadera strike, but it was Roma who broke the deadlock.

Bryan Cristante surged forward on the Dybala lay-off and saw his effort parried by Arijanet Muric, but only into the path of La Joya to finish it off on the rebound. It was his first Serie A goal of the season.

Manu Koné charged down a powerful Sebastian Walukiewicz strike, and from the resulting corner Thorstvedt nodded wide when he should’ve left it for Filippo Romagna behind him.

Neil El Aynaoui’s effort was straight at Muric, who had to rush off his line to smother at Cristante’s feet after an inspired Dybala pass.

Bailey had his boot torn apart by a Josh Doig foul just outside the area, so had to finish the half with it wrapped in duct tape, while Dybala’s free kick hit the side-netting.

Sassuolo lost Romagna to injury, while Mario Hermoso replaced the disappointing Kostas Tsimikas and within 60 seconds had been booked for a raised elbow on Doig inches outside the area.

Zeki Celik stung the goalkeeper’s gloves at the near post on a Dybala lay-off, but Sassuolo saw Domenico Berardi forced off after a bizarre head injury when he crossed paths with Cristante and fell very awkwardly.

Lorenzo Pellegrini came on and within 120 seconds had almost doubled Roma’s lead, as his delicate dink beat the goalkeeper only to bounce off the upright on Artem Dovbyk’s assist.

Wesley could’ve rolled across for Dovbyk, but instead tested Muric himself at the near post, while the Brazilian stood up a cross for Zeki Celik’s header over the bar.

It was a strong ending to the game for Wesley, who also flashed a great right-foot finish across the face of goal to skim the back post.

The result remained open though, as Gianluca Mancini threw himself in the way of a Walid Cheddira angled drive at the near post in stoppages.

Pellegrini also threatened again with a right-foot curler from outside the box that Muric pushed round the far post with one glove.

Gasperini explains Roma changes and gives fitness updates https://football-italia.net/gasperini-explains-roma-changes-fitness-update/ https://football-italia.net/gasperini-explains-roma-changes-fitness-update/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 13:44:34 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922860

Gian Piero Gasperini explains why he made such radical changes to the Roma attack against Sassuolo, including fitness updates on Matias Soulé and Evan Ferguson.

It kicks off at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia at 14.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from all today’s Serie A games on the Liveblog.

Soulé had originally been mentioned in the starting XI released to the media, but was then replaced in the official line-up by Manu Koné, moving Neil El Aynaoui into a more advanced role.

This is the first time that the Argentine talent has been left on the bench this season, so what prompted that decision?

“We play very often, and Soulé had practically not missed a minute yet. We start like this, I hope he can be a valuable resource off the bench,” Gasperini told DAZN.

Paulo Dybala is again used as a False 9, even though it has had extremely limited results so far, as Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk continue to struggle with one goal between them.

Following Thursday’s 2-1 Europa League defeat to Viktoria Plzen, Gasperini said that he had only just seen the first “real training session” from Ferguson, so what did that mean?

“He needs to be an important factor for the future. It was his first really hard working session, but unfortunately he also got a knock to the ankle and he’s on the bench today, but I’m not sure if he can play.”

A victory here would send Roma joint top of the Serie A table alongside Napoli, who beat Inter 3-1 last night.

“We all know the situation, but it’s quite early to start looking at the table. We need to focus our attention on Sassuolo, who are a newly promoted side, but getting good results already. We just need to concentrate on this game and getting the result we want today,” concluded Gasperini.

It is remarkable that Roma always saw the Stadio Olimpico as their fortress in previous years, but all four of their defeats in Serie A and the Europa League this season have been home fixtures.

Roma can go joint top of the table with a win away to Domenico Berardi’s Sassuolo, so give Leon Bailey his first start with Paulo Dybala and Neil El Aynaoui.

It kicks off at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia at 14.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from all today’s Serie A games on the Liveblog.

The Giallorossi are an unpredictable side at the moment, as while a victory would send them into joint first place with Napoli, they have also lost three of their last four competitive games.

Curiously, the defeats to Lille, Inter and Viktoria Plzen were all at the Stadio Olimpico, and they are still unbeaten on their travels this season.

Angelino is the only absentee, as Manu Kone has shaken off an ankle knock sustained on Thursday evening.

Gian Piero Gasperini keeps squad rotation to an absolute minimum, so Dybala start again, but centre-forwards Artem Dovbyk and Evan Ferguson are dropped for poor performances.

Instead, Bailey finally gets his first start for the club, with Dybala as a False 9.

Matias Soule’ had originally been named in the starting XI, but was then replaced by moving Neil El Aynaoui into a more advanced role.

Jan Ziolkowski was hauled off just 30 minutes into his first start for the club, so Zeki Celik is placed in the back three instead.

Sassuolo have improved recently with seven points from the last three rounds, steadily climbing up the table.

Tarik Muharemovic, Yeferson Paz, Daniel Boloca and Edoardo Pieragnolo are still out of action.

Former Roma players Nemanja Matic and Cristian Volpato are in the squad, but Berardi completes the trident attack with Andrea Pinamonti and Aliou Fadera.

Serie A: Sassuolo vs. Roma – Probable line-ups and where to watch on TV https://football-italia.net/serie-a-sassuolo-vs-roma-probable-line-ups-2/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-sassuolo-vs-roma-probable-line-ups-2/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 09:19:10 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922819

Paulo Dybala is expected to lead the line again for Roma when they take on Sassuolo in the league on Sunday afternoon, aiming to draw themselves level with Napoli at the top of the Serie A standings.

The weekend’s fixtures thus far have fallen relatively favourably for the Giallorossi: Inter were beaten by Napoli, while Milan had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Pisa, which means that Roma will draw level with the Partenopei at the top of the standings with a win against Sassuolo.

Pre-match reports suggest that Gian  Piero Gaperini will continue to leave both Artem Dovbyk and Evan Ferguson on the bench in favour of Dybala at centre-forward. If that is the case, then Matias Soule and Lorenzo Pellegrini are expected to provide the support in attack.

Kostas Tsimikas is set for another start in the absence of Angelino, unavailable through injury. Wesley is expected to start on the opposite flank.

Kick-off is due at 14.00 GMT.

Sassuolo vs. Roma: Probable line-ups

Sassuolo (4-3-3): Muric, Walukiewicz, Idzes, Romagna, Doig, Koné, Matic, Thorstvedt, Berardi, Pinamonti, Laurienté.

Roma (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Ndicka; Wesley, Kone, Cristante, Tsimikas; Soule, Pellegrini; Dybala.

Gasperini: ‘Dybala clarification, warning for Ferguson’ https://football-italia.net/gasperini-dybala-clarification-warn-ferguson/ https://football-italia.net/gasperini-dybala-clarification-warn-ferguson/#respond Sat, 25 Oct 2025 13:45:45 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922642

Gian Piero Gasperinini insists he cleared the air with Paulo Dybala, but warns Evan Ferguson ‘is evidently not’ giving the right response for Roma.

Their next game with Sassuolo kicks off at the Mapei Stadium on Sunday at 14.00 GMT.

The Giallorossi have been stuttering recently, as the on-going problem scoring goals has only intensified, resulting in back-to-back defeats against Inter and Viktoria Plzen.

This is an unusual problem for a team coached by Gasperini, who is finding real difficulties after nine years of Atalanta.

“It’s true that the main problem is this team isn’t accustomed to attacking the opposition penalty area, but the good news is this is something we can change with training,” said the coach in his press conference.

“In attack, as in defence, we need to play as a unit with the right positions to shake off marking. We need to get everyone back to full fitness, then they have to give a response.”

Gasperini had started the season with Ferguson as his first choice striker, but Artem Dovbyk has recently taken the role, when Dybala isn’t played as a False 9.

“Ferguson has to give responses on the field, and so far he is evidently not doing that,” added Gasp.

“Only yesterday did I see him with his first really good training session. He is 21 years old and is not accustomed to playing this regularly. We need him to gain confidence, but the only option is for him to work harder.

“It’s not necessary for a centre-forward to be big, tall and physical, you also need pace, technique, the ability to shoot and to combine with your teammates. If someone has all those characteristics, then he can resolve a lot of problems.”

Some Roma fans were jeering after the Europa League defeat to Viktoria Plzen on Thursday, but there was also tension when Dybala suggested the team was ‘sluggish’ and ‘underestimated’ the test.

Gasperini disagreed with that, but did say the strikers especially had to ‘take a look in the mirror’ and consider why they hadn’t been scoring lately.

“I meant that we all need to work together to understand how to play in those dangerous areas, how to attack the space and create those scoring opportunities,” explained Gasperini.

“I didn’t like Dybala’s words at that moment, but we all clarified our positions in the locker room. We cannot have the idea of being sluggish or underestimating our opponents.

“We accept that this squad has limitations right now, but doesn’t deserve to have their attitude called into question. That would be very worrying.”

Dybala played 90 minutes on Thursday for the first time in many months.

“He can play tomorrow, he’s got to start getting into the penalty area more, providing goals and assists. He mustn’t do the work of a midfielder, he is a striker. Now he is finding physical fitness and that is reassuring.”

Roma played in a very different way before Gasperini arrived and he is at pains to point out this is a work in progress.

“Jeers have to be accepted, both by the team as a group and by individuals. We react with hard work. I support whoever wears the Roma jersey, they must know how to react after a performance that was not up to par.

“We are in an initial phase of the process, there is enormous room for improvement.”

Lecce and Sassuolo both wasted golden scoring opportunities in a disappointing stalemate with a distinct lack of quality.

Both teams had a dismal start to the season, but went into the break for international duty with morale-boosting wins. The hosts saw Riccardo Sottil join Filip Marchwinski, Matias Perez and Gaby Jean on the treatment table. The Neroverdi got captain Domenico Berardi back, but were missing Daniel Boloca, Tarek Muharemovic, Yeferson Paz and Edoardo Pieragnolo.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Ylber Ramadani drilled wide from the edge of the area, while Filippo Romagna’s volley was deflected over by Kialonda Gaspar.

Nikola Stulic came close with a left-foot curler from distance that bent inches wide of the far post and Berisha’s half-volley was charge down by Romagna.

Armand Laurienté got the assist all wrong for Andrea Pinamonti when sent clear down the left after the restart, while Berardi first forced a save from Wladimiro Falcone’s foot at the near post, then drilled the rebound across the face of goal.

Tiago Gabriel made a decisive block on the Thorstvedt angled drive in stoppages, but had even braver defending when throwing his face in the way of a Pierini volley, which left him visibly shaken.

Serie A referees for Week 7, Massa taking Roma vs. Inter https://football-italia.net/serie-a-referees-week-7-massa-roma-vs-inter/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-referees-week-7-massa-roma-vs-inter/#respond Wed, 15 Oct 2025 19:16:43 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=920996

Serie A returns this weekend after the break for international duty, with Davide Massa assigned to referee Roma-Inter, Luca Marinelli officiating Milan-Fiorentina and Giovanni Ayroldi for Como-Juventus.

The squads are coming back together for training after travelling all over the world and will be back in action for their clubs for the Week 7 fixtures.

The biggest match without doubt is the battle between Roma and Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday evening.

This has been assigned to veteran referee Massa, with Francesco Meraviglia as the VAR.

Massa’s record with Roma is very balanced with 10 victories, 12 draws and nine defeats.

In comparison, Inter have a much stronger run under this referee, as he oversaw 20 wins, five stalemates and five losses.

There have been some editions of this fixture before with Massa, who was officiating Inter’s 1-0 win away to Roma in October 2024, but also the time the Giallorossi snatched a 2-1 victory at San Siro in October 2022.

The Partenopei boss signed a new contract in May after leading the Partenopei to their second Scudetto in three years.

Conte is followed by Allegri and Gasperini, who were appointed by Milan and Roma, respectively, last summer. Both Italian coaches earn €5m per season.

Below them, there’s a group of three coaches, Vincenzo Italiano, Stefano Pioli and Igor Tudor, earning €3m each, while Cristian Chivu and Maurizio Sarri get €2.5m per season.

Why Matic left Roma after just one year: ‘Fans respected me more than the club did’ https://football-italia.net/why-matic-left-roma-after-just-one-year/ https://football-italia.net/why-matic-left-roma-after-just-one-year/#respond Tue, 07 Oct 2025 10:21:27 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=919752

Sassuolo midfielder Nemanja Matic has explained why he spent just one season in Serie A with Roma in 2022-23, accusing the Giallorossi of breaking promises and lacking respect: ‘I felt like I was constantly on trial’.

Matic angry with Roma: ‘I felt like I was constantly on trial’

The former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder is still going strong in Serie A at the age of 37, following two years in Ligue 1 with Rennes and Lyon since his Roma departure in the summer of 2023

In the summer of 2022, Matic left Manchester United after five years at the end of his contract, and decided to join Roma on a free transfer.

He penned a one-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico, and has since claimed that he turned down much longer contract proposals in order to join the Giallorossi. Matic has also claimed that there was a promise that his contract would be extended after just a few months if performances were solid enough.

Speaking in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Matic has explained why his time with Roma remains a bit of a sore spot.

“When I left Manchester United, I chose Roma to join a project where I could stay for at least a couple of years,” Matic explained.

“I received some interesting offers with three-year proposals, and I was already getting on a bit. Then came the offer from Roma and Mourinho.

“At first I didn’t want to go because the offer was only for one year. Then I spoke with Mourinho, with my agent. I chose Roma for him especially, for the fans. I was told ‘sign, and if things go well, we’ll talk about a renewal as early as January’.

Matic went on to explain that the aforementioned contract extension never came through.

“At the beginning, with my family, we didn’t have the right stability. In my opinion, I played well and was doing okay. But in January, nobody knocked on my door. I tried to get in contact, and I was told that if I played more than 50% of the games, I would have been given an automatic renewal, but that wasn’t what we’d agreed the previous summer.

“I had this feeling like I was constantly on trial, but I was an experienced player, I deserved more respect and in February, I told the club that I would give my best until the end of the season to take the team as far as possible. I think I always gave my best. Then, at the end of the season, I decided to leave.

“The problem was the people promised things and didn’t come good. I lacked stability and didn’t feel good about that. I did my best, I felt the support of the fans, who respected me more than the club did. Rennes came knocking, offering a three-year contract, which meant more stability.”

The precise dates and kick-off times for Serie A Week 13 to 22 fixtures have been confirmed, all the way up to January 2026, including Roma-Napoli, Napoli-Juventus, Juve-Roma, Lazio-Napoli, Inter-Napoli, Juve-Napoli and Roma-Milan.

The Lega Serie A has set itself the task of giving far more advance notice on scheduling this season, bringing it more in line with other top European leagues.

With this in mind, they today released the full calendar for Serie A Week 13 to 22, all the way up to January 2026.

Week 16 is spread out, because Napoli, Inter, Bologna and Milan are all participating in the Supercoppa Italiana in Riyadh, so their games won’t be until January 14 and 15.

The kick-off times listed below are UK, so add one hour for local Italian time.

Serie A Women MD1 Round-Up: Wins for Inter, Roma & Lazio as Juventus held by Sassuolo https://football-italia.net/serie-a-women-md1-round-up-wins/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-women-md1-round-up-wins/#respond Sun, 05 Oct 2025 22:30:14 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=919570

The 2025-26 Serie A Women kicked off this weekend, as the twelve hopeful teams put their preparation into practice for the new season.

Once again, Juventus and Roma are considered to be front runners for the title, with a team outside of those two clubs not having won the competition since Fiorentina in 2016-17.

Meanwhile, Como have been investing heavily in their women’s team and Parma, Genoa and Ternana all new additions to the league.

This year’s competition has seen the number of teams increased from ten to twelve, promising more action for the growing women’s game in Italy.

Serie A Women – Match-Day 1 Round-Up

The Serie A Women season kicked off with Inter hosting new girls Ternana, with five different goalscorers securing an emphatic 5-0 win for the Nerazzurri. Martina Tomaselli, Haley Bugeja, Masa Tomasevic, Tessa Wullaert and Nikee Diana van Dijk all got their names on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Eleonora Pacioni was sent off for the visitors in the first-half, making life infinitely more difficult for the minnows.

After Inter, it was Roma’s turn to get their campaign off to a winning start. The Giallorossi dominated Parma in an impressive 4-0 victory, with goals from Alice Corelli, Rinsola Babajide, Manuele Giugliano and Giulia Dragoni.

Napoli left it until the 76th minute to break the deadlock against Fiorentina, with Cecille Fløe scoring the only goal as the Partenopei secured all three points.

In the biggest surprise of the weekend, Juventus were held to a 0-0 draw in Sassuolo. The champions were dominant, with 68% possession and 18 shots but were unable to finish their chances in an early blow for Max Canzi’s side.

Sunday’s matches saw Lazio and Como do battle in a tight game, with the Biancocelesti snatching the three points thanks to goals from Clarisse Le Bihan and Martina Piemonte. Veronica Bernardi scored a late consolation goal for the hosts but it was too little too late for the lakeside team.

Finally, Milan fought back from a goal down to beat Genoa 2-1. Alice Karin Sondergaard gave the hosts the lead in the 45th minute before Evelyn Ijeh equalised with six minutes to go and Emma Koivisto won the match for the Rossoneri in the 7th minute of injury time at the end of the game.

After the first round of fixtures, Inter, Roma, Lazio, Milan and Napoli make up the top five, all having won their first matches. Ternana sit bottom and their five goals conceded to Inter is a concerning early indicator that it may be a long season for the Umbrian club in the Serie A Women.

Verona 0-1 Sassuolo – Pinamonti penalty poached on rebound to seal 3 points for Neroverdi https://football-italia.net/verona-0-1-sassuolo-pinamonti-penalty-poached/ https://football-italia.net/verona-0-1-sassuolo-pinamonti-penalty-poached/#comments Fri, 03 Oct 2025 20:45:04 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=919287

Sassuolo emerged from a tough match against Verona with all three points thanks to a 1-0 victory, after Andrea Pinamonti scored the rebound after his penalty was saved by Montipo in the Gialloblu net.

The hosts controlled a majority of possession but were let down with their finishing; Brazilian forward Giovane Nascimento having five shots for Verona.

However, when Suat Serdar fouled Alieu Fadera in the Verona penalty box, Sassuolo had a golden chance to win the game. Pinamonti stepped up and, despite a fine save from Montipo to deny, he converted the rebound.

Verona 0-1 Sassuolo – How did the match go?

The first half was lively, with both sides creating chances but being denied by the goalkeepers.

Arijanet Muric was forced into several saves, including efforts from Giovane and Suat Serdar, while Lorenzo Montipò kept out Armand Laurienté’s powerful drive before the break.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 71st minute. Sassuolo were awarded a penalty after Alieu Fadera was brought down in the box, but Montipò saved Pinamonti’s spot-kick. The striker reacted quickest to the rebound, firing home from close range to put the Neroverdi ahead.

Verona pushed hard for an equaliser, with Gift Orban and Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro both denied in a frantic spell late on but Muric held firm to secure all three points.

The result lifts Sassuolo up the table, while Verona’s struggles in front of goal continue as the Gialloblu still seek their first win of the Serie A campaign.

Sassuolo star Berardi misses Verona clash: Grosso ‘Taking no risks’ https://football-italia.net/sassuolo-berardi-ruled-out-verona-grosso/ https://football-italia.net/sassuolo-berardi-ruled-out-verona-grosso/#respond Fri, 03 Oct 2025 18:36:25 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=919272

Sassuolo have confirmed a late, surprise absence for captain Domenico Berardi against Verona, with the forward missing from both the starting XI and the bench.

Coach Fabio Grosso revealed a minor physical issue in the build-up and said the club preferred caution.

“Unfortunately we lose a very important player,” Grosso told Sky before kick-off, with quotes via GOAL. “He had a small physical problem; we hope it’s nothing serious. We decided not to take any risks.”

Domenico Berardi suffers injury to his achilles tendon during the Serie A match between Hellas Verona and Sassuolo on March 3, 2024.

Sassuolo captain Berardi misses game against Verona

Berardi’s omission alters Sassuolo’s attacking balance for the Friday night trip to the Bentegodi and forces Grosso to reshuffle his forward line.

The Neroverdi had counted on their captain’s creativity and set-piece threat, but the medical staff advised against involvement.

With a crowded fixture list ahead, Sassuolo will look to manage minutes and avoid aggravating the issue. Verona, meanwhile, will attempt to capitalise on the visitors’ reduced firepower as both teams seek crucial points in the early season.

Verona vs Sassuolo – Official Line-ups https://football-italia.net/verona-vs-sassuolo-official-line-ups/ https://football-italia.net/verona-vs-sassuolo-official-line-ups/#respond Fri, 03 Oct 2025 17:49:22 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=919261

The official starting line-ups are in for Verona’s Serie A clash with Sassuolo at the Stadio Bentegodi. Both sides will be desperate to secure valuable points in the league as they look to build momentum early in the season.

For Verona, coach Paolo Zanetti will be hoping his side can make the most of home advantage and rely on the support of the Bentegodi crowd to drive them forward. The hosts are without a win in their opening five league games.

Sassuolo, meanwhile, arrive looking to exploit their attacking strengths and frustrate the Gialloblu. The Neroverdi have won two and lost three of their first five matches but managed to secure an impressive win over Lazio last month.

This match is expected to be tightly contested, with both teams targeting consistency after mixed starts to their campaigns. With plenty of attacking talent on show and Serie A points on the line, all eyes will be on which side can impose their game and gain the upper hand.
