Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini hits back at Milan owner Gerry Cardinale and argues that ‘someone in the USA might cheer more for Cagliari than for Milan.’

What did Cardinale say about Cagliari?

Milan owner Cardinale attracted criticism from Cagliari President Giulini after claiming in a recent interview that “In the United States, no one wants to see Cagliari against Lecce, and that’s a problem. Competition is the essence of sport, but it’s not rewarded financially.”

Giulini replied to Cardinale with a post on X social media: “Dear Cardinale, it’s easy to say that nobody cares about Cagliari-Lecce when one only knows Sardinia as a tourist,” said the Rossoblu president.

“The eighth club in Italy by fanbase is watched, respected and, perhaps, someone in the USA might cheer more for Cagliari than for Milan.”

Cagliari and Milan haven’t yet met this season, as the first Serie A encounter between these two sides will take place at the start of January 2026.

Milan drew 1-1 against Atalanta on Tuesday in Serie A Week 9, which is being played midweek.

Cagliari host Sassuolo tomorrow, Thursday, October 30. The Sardinians sit 14th in Serie A with nine points. They have collected one win, two draws and two defeats in their last five games.

Milan, on the other hand, only lost one game so far this season, but have collected just two wins and three draws in the last five games so they are now three points below table leaders Napoli.

Caprile wonder saves just keep raising his price tag at Cagliari https://football-italia.net/caprile-wonder-saves-raising-pricetag-cagliari/ https://football-italia.net/caprile-wonder-saves-raising-pricetag-cagliari/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 17:23:28 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922929

Elia Caprile proved once again today that he is a great goalkeeper and Cagliari made a wise decision demanding at least €18m to sell in the summer, as now he’ll be worth more.

The shot-stopper made some more incredible saves in the 2-2 draw against Hellas Verona today at the Stadio Bentegodi, keeping his team in the game for their late comeback against the run of play.

Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini had bought him outright from Napoli for €8m and the idea was to sell, but only if a big offer came along, just like the one they accepted from Fiorentina for Roberto Piccoli.

Impressive Caprile will cost the big clubs

Caprile was given a price-tag of no less than €15-18m to even consider a transfer, and as nobody turned up with that kind of money, Giulini was happy to keep the goalkeeper.

His performances have been remarkable so far this season, as not a week goes by without some extraordinary saves hitting the headlines, and his consistency is so impressive.

Caprile only celebrated his 24th birthday a couple of months ago, and it’s easy to assume the step up to the next level has only been delayed a little bit.

Now a few big clubs have already set their sights on a goalie who is destined to be a protagonist in the next transfer sessions.

Serie A | Verona 2-2 Cagliari: Late comeback denies Hellas victory https://football-italia.net/serie-a-verona-2-2-cagliari-late-comeback/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-verona-2-2-cagliari-late-comeback/#respond Sun, 26 Oct 2025 16:03:38 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=922895

Cagliari completed a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in stoppages, as Hellas Verona are still without a victory this season.

Hellas were still looking for their first win of the season after four draws and three defeats, missing Daniel Oyegoke, Maotasem Al-Musrati and Tomas Suslov. The Sardinians lost Yerry Mina and Alessandro Deiola, joining Andrea Belotti, Boris Radunovic and Alessandro Di Pardo on the treatment table, but Zito Luvumbo returned after one point from three rounds.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Gennaro Borrelli shook off an early clash of heads with Unai Nunez to surge onto a long Matteo Prati ball and fire just over the bar for Verona.

Lorenzo Montipò got down for a sensational fingertip save to push the Gianluca Gaetano daisy-cutter inches past the far post.

Unai Nunez went off with a shoulder injury for Hellas, while Borrelli had penalty appeals waved away for a risky Roberto Gagliardini tackle.

Instead, Gagliardini put Verona in front with his glancing header on a Giovane free kick that looped up and dropped into the far bottom corner. It was the ex-Inter midfielder’s first Serie A goal for two years.

Verona thought they had to equalise on 34 minutes until being denied by an extraordinary double Elia Caprile save, first to push the Suat Serdar strike onto the crossbar, then parry the Gift Orban follow-up from point-blank range too.

Caprile made another incredible save when Giovane was at full stretch to volley a low cross, sticking up a hand to push it away from point-blank range.

However, Verona still doubled their advantage with a classic counter-attack. Belghali started it from inside his own half down the right, sending Giovane forward to roll across for the simple Orban tap-in from nine yards.

Valentini’s glancing header on a Giovane free kick also tested Caprile, but Cagliari got back into it when Riyad Idrissi sprung the offside trap down the left on an inspired Adam Obert pass and surprised Montipò at the near top corner with a powerful finish.

It sparked a comeback from the Sardinians, who got back on level terms in stoppages thanks to a fantastic solo effort from Mattia Felici. The substitute completed a give and go with Leonardo Pavoletti to break down the left, squirmed past two tackles and beat Montipò with an angled drive.

Bologna climbed the table with their first away win in Cagliari, sealed thanks to Emil Holm and Riccardo Orsolini goals.

The Sardinians missed Andrea Belotti, Boris Radunovic, Nicola Pintus and Alessandro Di Pardo, but Yerry Mina shook off a knock to start. Ciro Immobile was the only remaining Bologna absentee and they hoped to build momentum after the 4-0 win over Pisa.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Matteo Prati smacked the frame of the goal with a scorcher from distance after nine minutes, although it wouldn’t have counted over an earlier foul on Emil Holm.

Mattia Felici had the ball in the net from the tightest of angles on 26 minutes, but Cagliari saw the goal disallowed because Michel Adopo’s body-check on Lewis Ferguson created that space.

Federico Bernardeschi’s long-range strike was pushed over the bar by Elia Caprile, and Bologna scored from the resulting corner. Jens Odgaard at the back post nodded down the set play for Holm’s cushioned volley from five yards.

Felici sprung the offside trap in the centre-circle to sprint clear on goal, but was denied one-on-one by a remarkable Nicola Ravaglia fingertip save.

Some panicked defending prevented Michael Folorunsho assists from wreaking havoc, but Bologna doubled their lead with a moment of sheer quality from substitute Orsolini.

He gathered down the right, cut inside Adam Obert, and smashed an unstoppable left-foot screamer into the near top corner from outside the penalty area.

Orsolini threatened a third moments later, this time a right-foot finish flashing across the face of goal, and Caprile kept out Tommaso Pobega following a Ze Pedro error.

There was confusion when the referee pointed to the spot, quickly corrected by VAR, as if anything it was Holm who had kicked Folorunsho rather than the other way round.

Serie A returns this weekend after the break for international duty, with Davide Massa assigned to referee Roma-Inter, Luca Marinelli officiating Milan-Fiorentina and Giovanni Ayroldi for Como-Juventus.

The squads are coming back together for training after travelling all over the world and will be back in action for their clubs for the Week 7 fixtures.

The biggest match without doubt is the battle between Roma and Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday evening.

This has been assigned to veteran referee Massa, with Francesco Meraviglia as the VAR.

Massa’s record with Roma is very balanced with 10 victories, 12 draws and nine defeats.

In comparison, Inter have a much stronger run under this referee, as he oversaw 20 wins, five stalemates and five losses.

There have been some editions of this fixture before with Massa, who was officiating Inter’s 1-0 win away to Roma in October 2024, but also the time the Giallorossi snatched a 2-1 victory at San Siro in October 2022.

Semih Kilicsoy is struggling to get any playing time at Cagliari, but just went viral for a sensational overhead kick scored for the Turkey Under-21 team.

The forward only celebrated his 20th birthday in August and made the transfer from Besiktas to Cagliari on loan for €1m.

There is an option to buy for a further €12m plus €2m bonuses, and a 20 per cent cut of the future sale fee.

He has so far made only four appearances in the Cagliari jersey, two in Serie A and two in the Coppa Italia, all as a substitute for a grand total of just 84 minutes of football.

However, he might be hard to ignore for much longer after a sensational goal for Turkey in the Under-21 European Championship qualifier against Hungary.

The ball was deflected up into the air just six minutes into the match this afternoon and he went into a technically perfect overhead kick to find the net.

Maignan future uncertain as Milan line up Cagliari’s Caprile as possible successor https://football-italia.net/maignan-future-uncertain-as-milan-line-up/ https://football-italia.net/maignan-future-uncertain-as-milan-line-up/#respond Fri, 10 Oct 2025 17:40:21 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=920264

The future of Mike Maignan at Milan is increasingly uncertain as negotiations over a contract extension remain at a standstill, with the Rossoneri already exploring alternatives in case the French goalkeeper decides to leave next summer.

Maignan’s deal runs until June 2026, but talks for a renewal have stalled, raising the possibility of a sale at the end of the current season to avoid losing him on a free transfer further down the line.

His leadership and reliability between the posts have made him a key figure since arriving from Lille in 2021, but Milan may be forced to make a difficult decision if no agreement is reached.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri, back at San Siro to restore consistency and a winning mentality, reportedly considers securing a top-level goalkeeper one of his priorities.

Milan eye Caprile as Maignan successor

Among the potential replacements being monitored is Elia Caprile, the 24-year-old Cagliari goalkeeper who has impressed, according to reports via MilanNews24.

Caprile was instrumental in the Sardinians’ survival last season and is seen as a long-term prospect capable of stepping into Maignan’s role.

However, Cagliari have placed a steep €35m valuation on their star, a fee that reflects both his potential and growing reputation. The Verona-born goalkeeper has also drawn interest from several other top clubs in Italy and abroad.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Caprile remained focused on the present.

“Right now, I’m only thinking about Cagliari,” he said, keeping a professional stance amid growing speculation.

His words suggest that while his future remains open, any move will depend on Milan’s next steps and whether Maignan commits to a new deal.

Napoli boss Antonio Conte is the highest-paid coach in Serie A in 2025-26, followed by Massimiliano Allegri and Gian Piero Gasperini.

TMW has listed the salaries of all 20 Serie A coaches in 2025-26 and Conte emerges as the highest-paid with an €8m net wage.

The Partenopei boss signed a new contract in May after leading the Partenopei to their second Scudetto in three years.

Conte is followed by Allegri and Gasperini, who were appointed by Milan and Roma, respectively, last summer. Both Italian coaches earn €5m per season.

Below them, there’s a group of three coaches, Vincenzo Italiano, Stefano Pioli and Igor Tudor, earning €3m each, while Cristian Chivu and Maurizio Sarri get €2.5m per season.

There are just five coaches in Serie A earning less than €1m per season. Carlos Cuesta, Kosta Runjaic, Paolo Zanetti, Davide Nicola, Eusebio Di Francesco and Fabio Grosso.

A comparison between the Serie A standings after six games this season and the same stage last year shows a few surprises, with Roma emerging as the biggest climbers and Torino suffering the heaviest drop.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, via MilanNews, Napoli and Roma currently lead the way with 15 points, though Gian Piero Gasperini’s Giallorossi have improved their tally by six points compared to 2024-25.

Milan also show progress, sitting on 13 points, two more than a year ago, whilst Inter have earned 12 points, just one more than at this stage last season.

Among the biggest movers are Atalanta and Bologna, both +3, while Juventus remain steady with the same total as in 2024-25.

At the other end, Torino have dropped six points, while Fiorentina and Lazio have also slipped significantly (-4 and -3 respectively).

Serie A | Udinese 1-1 Cagliari – Final chance goes begging https://football-italia.net/serie-a-udinese-1-1-cagliari/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-udinese-1-1-cagliari/#comments Sun, 05 Oct 2025 12:28:06 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=919444

Udinese and Cagliari had to settle for a point apiece at the Bluenergy Stadium in Serie A on Sunday afternoon, but the hosts will rue their missed opportunity right at the last, which should have seen them walk away with all three points.

You can follow the action from the rest of Sunday’s Serie A fixtures, including Juventus vs. Milan and Fiorentina vs. Roma on the Football Italia Liveblog.

It was the visitors who claimed the first-half lead in Udine on Sunday. A series of shots from Mattia Felici and Matteo Prati were both blocked on the edge of the area, but the ball fell kindly for Borrelli from 10 yards out. He just needed to dispatch past Razvan Sava, who was already on the floor.

Udinese would find the equaliser just shy of the hour mark. Nicolo Zaniolo’s corner was headed back into the mixer at the far post, and Christian Kabasele was able to pull out an improvised flick to send the ball past Elia Caprile for 1-1.

Udinese had a glorious chance to snatch all three points in stoppage time: A defensive slip gave Keinan Davis the ball just outside the area. The Englishman’s effort was saved by Caprile, and though Vakoun Bayo had an empty net to aim at on the follow-up, he was off balance and fired off target.

Sunday’s result means that both teams remain level on points in the Serie A standings (eight apiece), with Cagliari occupying 10th place and Udinese in 11th.

Cagliari coach Pisacane responds to sensational Balotelli rumours https://football-italia.net/pisacane-responds-balotelli-cagliari-rumours/ https://football-italia.net/pisacane-responds-balotelli-cagliari-rumours/#comments Fri, 03 Oct 2025 18:07:02 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=919270

Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane has moved to cool speculation linking Mario Balotelli with a sensational switch to Sardinia, underlining that his focus remains on the attacking options already within the squad.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before his side’s trip to Udinese, Pisacane emphasised the depth available in his forward line and the tactical flexibility of his players.

“We have a wide choice in attack,” the Rossoblu coach explained, with quotes via TuttoMercatoWeb.

“I’m also thinking of Luvumbo, who can act as a false nine. It depends on the type of player we want to choose for the specific match.”

Cagliari coach responds to Balotelli rumours

Reports had emerged in recent days suggesting Balotelli could be a surprise reinforcement for Cagliari, but Pisacane was quick to deflect when pressed on the topic.

“Balotelli? Ask Angelozzi,” he responded bluntly, referring to the club’s sporting director.

His words suggest the club are more focused on maximising current resources than exploring the possibility of the former Italy striker.

Cagliari confirm Belotti serious anterior cruciate ligament tear https://football-italia.net/cagliari-belotti-anterior-cruciate-ligament/ https://football-italia.net/cagliari-belotti-anterior-cruciate-ligament/#comments Sun, 28 Sep 2025 15:40:52 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=918495

Cagliari have confirmed the worst fears are realised, as Andrea Belotti suffered a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during the defeat to Inter.

The 31-year-old slipped and fell awkwardly, colliding with Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez during last night’s 2-0 loss at the Unipol Domus.

There were immediately concerns that this could be a serious injury, as confirmed by coach Fabio Pisacane’s post-match interviews.

Tests were performed today and a statement from Cagliari announced that a lesion was found in the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee.

Belotti will see a specialist over the next few days, but the usual course of action for this type of injury is surgery and four to six months out of action.

It is a blow for Il Gallo, who had just joined Cagliari on deadline day from Como and scored two goals in the victory away to Lecce.

He now has 116 goals in 351 Serie A appearances, along with 32 assists, representing clubs including Palermo, Roma, Fiorentina, Como, Benfica and Cagliari.

Pisacane fear Belotti has serious knee injury for Cagliari https://football-italia.net/pisacane-fear-belotti-has-serious-knee-injury/ https://football-italia.net/pisacane-fear-belotti-has-serious-knee-injury/#respond Sat, 27 Sep 2025 21:51:04 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=918385

Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane acknowledges Inter ‘deserved’ the 2-0 victory, but is afraid Andrea Belotti’s season might be over. ‘He felt a crack in his knee.’

It was a negative evening all around at the Unipol Domus, because not only did they suffer a 2-0 home defeat, but the Sardinians also saw star striker Belotti carried off following a freak accident.

He was running after a long ball when goalkeeper Josep Martinez rushed out to meet it, then slipped and fell awkwardly, causing the Inter man to crash into him.

Cagliari worried about Belotti setback

“We hope it is not too serious, we’re waiting for the tests, but his health is the most important thing right now,” Pisacane told Sky Sport Italia.

“We really hope it is not what we think it is, because he said that he felt a crack in his knee. We’ve got to try to think positive right now and wait for the test results.”

It would be a devastating blow if Belotti was diagnosed with ligament damage, as the 31-year-old only just joined Cagliari from Como on deadline day.

He made an immediate impression with two goals in the 2-1 win away to Lecce last week.

Cristian Chivu said that Cagliari had surprised him with a change of system, so how did Pisacane come up with those adjustments?

“We wanted to put Michael Folorunsho on Hakan Calhanoglu, while Sebastiano Esposito was targeting Stefan de Vrij. Initially, we wanted to use a 4-4-2 and go out there with a strong attitude in front of our fans,” explained the coach.

“We were suffering having two creative midfielders there, so we pushed Folorunsho further up to support Esposito. Later on, we took off a defender and put new wingers on, that is something I’d like to try again.

“Ultimately, we’ve got to give credit to Inter, as they played very well and deserved the victory.”

Lautaro Martinez had opened the scoring early on with a looping header, and the game remained open until Francesco Pio Esposito met the Federico Dimarco pull-back.

“We didn’t make the most of the opportunities in the first half, especially when winning the ball back, as our choices in the transitions were not the best ones,” added Pisacane.

“In the second half, we tried to push further up, but Inter did really well. I cannot have asked for more from my lads, Inter respected us and put in a great performance.”
